Global Positioning System Chips

On page 2 of Bill Gates’ Article ‘A Robot in Every Home,’ he talks about robots builders using ‘Global Positioning System Chips’ in their designs. Global Positioning System is also called GPS. GPS is a device that enables objects to be tracked via satellite. This is now a worldwide phenomenon but it was originally designed for, and is still controlled by the U.S. military. A GPS chip in an object sends out signals to a satellite which then transmits the signals to a receiver. These signals give the receiver information to calculate the exact position and speed of the object. This technology is also available to all, and has served people a lot over the years. It is used to track stolen objects, and for navigation purposes; for these reasons it is gaining more popularity world-wide by the second. This gives people reason to speculate that GPS chips will soon be “as basic as the telephone.”
